Cannabis Flavonoids Show Potent Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Activity
While cannabinoids like CBD and THC often get the spotlight, new research is shining a light on the lesser-known powerhouses found in the cannabis plant: its flavonoids.
A 2025 study optimized the extraction of total flavonoids from Cannabis sativa L. using a five-factor response surface method. The research team then evaluated the biological activity of flavonoids extracted from different solvent fractions. Results revealed that cannabis flavonoids aren’t just plant protectors; they pack real therapeutic potential.
Among the five extract types studied, the petroleum ether phase (CSFp) had the strongest antibacterial activity, especially against E. coli, Bacillus subtilis, and B. pumilus. Meanwhile, the n-butanol (CSFb) and ethyl acetate (CSFe) extracts excelled in antioxidant action, showing significant free radical scavenging and reducing power in standard DPPH and ABTS+ assays.
Notably, all samples contained a rich variety of compounds, including vitexin, luteolin, apigenin, kaempferol, and even trace levels of CBDA, CBD, and THC. These compounds have already been linked to anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in other studies.
Using an analytic hierarchy process to compare samples, the study ranked CSFp as the most effective for combined antimicrobial and antioxidant impact. This adds weight to the idea that cannabis-derived flavonoids deserve far more attention in medicine, beyond their usual mention as dietary polyphenols.
With over 550 known compounds in Cannabis sativa, this study reminds us that cannabinoids are only part of the picture. Flavonoids may be unsung therapeutic agents worth exploring in the push toward cleaner, plant-based alternatives.
