The prominence in contemporary America of recreational marijuana is abetted by its increasing accessibility. Although marijuana remains illegal at the federal level, regulated access to marijuana products has been legally relaxed in 28 states as of January 2017. This liberalization has fueled an astonishing market. Forbes magazine recently reported that sales of marijuana grew by an unprecedented 30% in 2016 to $6.7 billion, with sales projected to top $20.2 billion by 2021.1 Despite its confused legal status, marijuana’s public consumption for recreational use is a phenomenon that is here to stay.
