Studies suggest a link between prenatal cannabis use and preterm birth, low birthweight, and other adverse birth outcomes. New findings add to the growing body of research on how using cannabis during pregnancy may affect offspring. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found no association between maternal prenatal cannabis use and early developmental delays.
Based on self-reporting and urine toxicology, around 6% of the more than 100 000 pregnancies evaluated in the study included some amount of cannabis use at 8- to 10-weeks’ gestation. There was no association observed between this usage and speech and language disorders, global developmental delays, and motor delays in children assessed through 5.5 years of age, regardless of frequency of cannabis use during pregnancy.
Despite the findings, “recommendations for pregnant individuals and those considering pregnancy to discontinue cannabis use should be followed” based on prior evidence of adverse fetal and neonatal outcomes, the authors wrote.
