Innate and adaptive immunity are key evolutionary systems that both protect and repair an organism; however, maladaptation of either or both systems can result in neurodegenerative and autoimmune disorders. Therefore, a key to exploiting these systems for optimal health is to understand how they are regulated within the wide range of contexts in the organism’s lifespan. Innate and adaptive immunity are comprised of specific immune system physical barriers (e.g. epithelium, cilia), phenotypically distinct peripheral immune cells (e.g. mast cells, macrophages), CNS-derived microglia, and a complexity of molecules that are produced by these specialized cells that drive immune responses (e.g. inflammation, complement cascades). The cannabinoid system is implicated in of these systems; however, the full extent of how both endogenous cannabinoids and phytocannabinoids play regulatory roles in these systems remains unclear.
This special issue aims to provide insight into our current understanding of the field and highlight new findings. All aspects of the cannabinoid-immune interface will be considered for the issue. Reviews, mini-reviews, and original research articles will be considered. Authors are encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration prior to full submission.
Topics of interest for this special issue include but are not limited to:
-
Cannabinoids and inflammation
-
Cannabinoids and cytokine and complement regulation
-
Cannabinoids and microglia
-
Cannabinoids and peripheral immune cell signaling
-
Cannabinoids and the blood-brain-barrier changes with immune challenge
We also encourage submission of papers that have been published in conference proceedings, with the requirement that the authors have made significant extensions as compared to the already published version of the study.
Reminder that ICRS, SCC, and IACM members receive a 40% discount off of article processing charges, if they elect to publish articles open access.
