In January 2016, the National Institutes of Health introduced a policy requiring all applicants for grant funding to factor sex as a biological variable into research designs, analyses, and reporting (or, alternatively, provide scientific justification for single-sex investigations). This was an important step toward integrating sex and gender diversity into a rigorous research agenda. Five years later, the need to understand how these variables impact biology and therapy has become even clearer. The field of cannabis and cannabinoid research, where sexual dimorphisms are the rule rather than the exception, offers an outstanding case in point.
This Call for Papers aims to provide insight into our current understanding of the interface between cannabinoids and sex/gender. All aspects of the problem will be considered. Reviews, mini-reviews, and articles reporting original research on cells, animals and humans will be considered. Authors are encouraged to submit an abstract for consideration prior to full submission.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
-
Sexual dimorphisms in phytocannabinoid action and metabolism: cell culture and animal studies
-
Sexual dimorphisms in phytocannabinoid action and metabolism: human studies
-
Sexual dimorphisms in endocannabinoid formation and deactivation: cell culture and animal studies
-
Sexual dimorphisms in endocannabinoid formation and deactivation: human studies
-
Sexual dimorphisms in the response to endocannabinoid-based therapies: animal and human studies
-
Gender diversity in phytocannabinoid action: human studies
