The Role of Light in Cannabis Cultivation

A recent study explored how fine-tuning light spectra in a lab-grown environment can impact Cannabis sativa shoot growth, harvest yields, and plant vigor across multiple cycles. The findings? Carefully managed light can dramatically enhance clean cannabis production without relying on synthetic additives.

Cannabis Light Treatments and Study Design

Researchers tested two well-known hemp cultivars, ‘BaOx’ and ‘Cherry 1’, using a fed-batch and hedging method in Oasis® foam and DKW medium. In this in vitro setup, plant shoot tips were placed in RV750 vessels under different red-to-blue light ratios, with or without supplemental far-red light. The results were measured over five harvest cycles spanning 10 weeks.

Key Results in Cannabis and the Color of Light

The presence of 5% far-red light had a clear and consistent effect: it increased shoot numbers and shoot length in both cultivars, regardless of the underlying light ratio. Shoot counts rose from 15 to 28 in just three cycles under far-red conditions, compared to a rise of only 15 to 18 without it. Shoot length also improved, climbing from 19 to 25 mm early in the trial. Even when length declined by the fifth cycle, far-red-treated plants still outperformed those without.

Biomass Results from Cannabis Light Exposure

The dry mass of the shoots was highest in the first cycle when blue light was more dominant. Under the most blue-rich settings, ‘Cherry 1’ reached 6 mg and ‘BaOx’ reached 7 mg per shoot. At the lowest blue-light exposure, mass fell to around 2 mg. This highlights how different light colors uniquely influence plant development.

Cannabis Rooting and Clean Cultivation Applications

Rooting success remained strong across the board. About 68% of all shoot tips successfully rooted ex vitro on a mist bench, regardless of which light treatment they received in vitro. This is promising for cultivators aiming to scale propagation systems without compromising plant quality.
