In the ever-evolving field of dental materials, nature is making a bold comeback. A new 2025 study has shown that hemp fiber, when added to poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base resin, can significantly influence surface roughness and cleanability. With sustainability and performance both in focus, researchers explored how untreated and lignin-pectin-free hemp fibers affected surface texture; a key determinant of plaque buildup, staining, and prosthetic longevity.

Why Surface Roughness Matters

Dental prostheses must be smooth to minimize plaque adhesion and prevent infections. The benchmark? A surface roughness (Ra) below 0.2 μm, which is considered clinically acceptable. Rougher surfaces can harbor microbes, increasing the risk of periodontal disease, prosthetic stomatitis, and patient dissatisfaction.

The Natural Fiber Fix

The study prepared PMMA resin samples reinforced with two types of hemp fibers: untreated (HeF) and lignin-pectin-free HeF. Both were added at 1% by weight. Samples were subjected to standardized ‘finishing’ and ‘polishing’ protocols, including Universal Polishing Paste and Lesk Polishing Liquid, to assess their impact on Ra.
